World Afro Day: Tignon Laws Set The Precedent For The Appropriation and Misconception Around Black Hair
Happy World Afro Day:
Today – 15 Septepmber – is World Afro Day. A day to celebrate the beauty and versatility of Afro hair, as well as raise awareness about hair discrimination and inequality. This is a day that is about so much more than just hair. For Black people, hair is political and carries a weight of historical meaning.
Black Natural Hair has many times become a subject of ridicule and often derided in Eurocentric world where the west dictate beauty standards. Black people are being subjected to microaggressions, discrimination and overt racism because of their natural hair,in recent ad at clicks Black hair was depicted as ‘dirty’ or ‘unprofessional’, ‘frizzy and dull’ while many blacks have been expelled from school or even fired from their jobs because of their natural hair. This year, World Afro Day marks the beginning of a 30-day call to schools in UK and headteachers to comply with the Equality Act and eradicate any discrimination around Afro hair
